The NIWAKA Building, completed on April 10th 2009, is home to the Kyoto Design House on the 1st floor, NIWAKA (Jewelry Brand) Flagship Store on the 2nd floor, NIWAKA Head Office on the 3rd and the 4th, and Event Space in the Basement. Designed by famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the building is designed to harmonize with a historical atmosphere of Kyoto. The basic elements of the building are the gable roof, the concrete outer wall, and the slender lattices for ventilation. The aluminum-cast roofs, with an equal inclination on each floor, give the structure a calm face. The theme of the building is to “tie the memory (past) of the city of Kyoto with the present and the future.”
