Clever Naming

The name given to this set, “hashi-oki“(葉枝おき), is actually a clever play on words when written in Japanese.  While the word hashi-oki means chopsticks rest, the normal “hashi” (箸)character for chopsticks has been replaced by homophones. To create the same pronunciation, the characters for “leaf” (葉) and “branch” (枝) have been used in its place. Like calling someone a “deer” friend next to a picture of a fawn, the name of this set brings a smile to the faces of our Japanese guests, and we hope it will for you, too!

Autumn orange and red colors of Japanese maple leaves in Arashiyama, Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto’s Autumn Leaves

Autumn is the season for viewing the gorgeous changing leaves that paint Japan in hues of red, yellow, and orange. Surrounded by mountains, Kyoto is particularly famous for its autumn leaves. One of the most popular and beautiful locations for viewing the changing of the leaves is in Kyoto’s Arashiyama area where the surrounding hills become flush with brilliant fall colors. These chopstick rests are a fantastic way to bring this magnificent Kyoto atmosphere home to share with friends and family.
